  85. Strategic Business Simulator - General Overview

  88.      The Strategic Business Simulator is a management decision making
  89.      game designed for classroom use by High School and College Students.
  90.      It can be used in conjunction with accounting, economics, finance,
  91.      management, and marketing courses.

  94.      You and the other participants will be acting as teams
  95.      of business executives making periodic high-level decisions. 
  96.      These decisions will be similar to those which would be made
  97.      in actual business practice over a much longer time.
  98.  
  99.  
  100.      The game is actually a mathematical model of a business
  101.      economy, within which several firms compete for their share of
  102.      the market.  The decision teams, consisting of three or more
  103.      individuals are each given a firm to operate.  While each firm
  104.      produces a similar product, they are not perfect substitutes.

  107.      The basic problem involved in the exercise is that of choosing
  108.      a course of action under conditions of uncertainty.  The
  109.      results of any decisions will depend not only on your
  110.      decisions alone, but also on those made by competitors.  Thus,
  111.      an unwise decision might occur because of a rival firm's
  112.      action, rather than the unreasonableness of the decision
  113.      itself.  For example, a cut in price will increase your share
  114.      of the market -- but only if other firms are not cutting
  115.      prices at the same time.

  118.      At the beginning of each quarter, each team makes decisions
  119.      for their firm choosing output levels, price, advertising
  120.      expenditures, etc.  The computer then simulates the business
  121.      activity of each firm and prepares reports showing the results
  122.      during the quarter.  These reports, which indicate the firm's
  123.      financial position, as well as other data, are then
  124.      transmitted to the teams.  They are the only means by which
  125.      information is exchanged.  This cycle is repeated as
  126.      frequently as time permits, thus allowing several years of
  127.      simulated business activity and the associated decision-making
  128.      experience to take place.

  133. Requirements

  135.      A computer system capable of running Windows 3.1 or higher.
  136.      (VGA or EGA graphics and a Mouse are recommended.)

  141. Installing Strategic Business Simulator
  142.  
  143.      Installing Strategic Business Simulator is a straightforward
  144.      process.
  145.  
  146.      1.   Start Windows.
  147.  
  148.      2.   Place the Strategic Business Simulator Installation Disk
  149.           #1 into a floppy drive of your computer.
  150.  
  151.      3.   Select the File:Run menu option of the Program Manager,
  152.           and type into the dialog box the following:   A:\INSTALL
  153.           [return]

  155.      4.   The installation program will prompt you for any
  156.           additional information.

  162. Using Strategic Business Simulator
  163.  
  164.      The Strategic Business Simulator (SBS) software consists of
  165.      two individual programs, the Strategic Business Simulator -
  166.      Control Panel program and the Strategic Business Simulator -
  167.      Decision Entry program.
  168.  
  169.      The Strategic Business Simulator - Control Panel program is to
  170.      be used by the Game Coordinator.  The SBS - Control Panel
  171.      program allows the Game Coordinator to setup new games, change
  172.      company names and passwords, process a quarter of data, view
  173.      and print off the Quarterly Reports of the companies and the
  174.      Company Ranking Report.

  176.      The Strategic Business Simulator - Decision Entry program is
  177.      to be used by the game participants.  The SBS - Decision Entry
  178.      program allows the game participants to enter their company's
  179.      management decisions each quarter.

  182. Start the Strategic Business Simulator - Control Panel:

  184.      1.   Open the program manager group window that contains the
  185.           Strategic Business Simulator software.
  186.  
  187.      2.   Double-click the Strategic Business Simulator - Control
  188.           Panel icon.

  191. Note: Although the Strategic Business Simulator windows cannot be
  192. resized, the Strategic Business Simulator can be reduced to an
  193. icon.  As an icon the Strategic Business Simulator can quickly be
  194. recalled.

  197. Initialize a New Game
  198.  
  199. To initialize a new Strategic Business Simulator game, the Game
  200. Coordinator should choose File:New  from the menu bar of the
  201. Strategic Business Simulator - Control Panel program.  First, you
  202. will be asked for the name of the Industry.  Second, you will be
  203. prompted to choose the number of companies (or teams) that will be
  204. entering decisions.  This can be between 2 and 15 companies. 
  205. Third, there will be a series of prompts which will allow you to
  206. enter a company name and a decision entry password for each
  207. company.  Fifth, you will be asked to enter a Strategic Business
  208. Simulator - Control Panel password for the game data file.  This
  209. password will allow you to open the file from within the Strategic
  210. Business Simulator - Control Panel program.  Sixth, you will be
  211. prompted to enter a file name for saving game data.  The default
  212. file extension for the game data is SBS.
  213.  
  214. After a new game is initialized, the Game Coordinator will probably
  215. want to print off quarter 0 of the Quarterly Reports and distribute
  216. them to their respective companies.  This can be accomplished by
  217. choosing the View Quarterly Reports button.  When the Quarterly
  218. Reports are displayed, choose File:Print to print the reports to
  219. the default printer.  When you have completed viewing the Quarterly
  220. Reports, simply choose File:Exit.

  222. After printing off the Quarterly Reports, you can quit the
  223. Strategic Business Simulator - Control Panel program by choosing
  224. File:Exit.
  225.  
  226. Before the companies can begin entering their management decisions,
  227. the Game Coordinator should privately disclose to each company
  228. their decision entry passwords. 
  229.  
  230. Start the Strategic Business Simulator - Decision Entry program:
  231.  
  232.      1.   Open the program manager group window that contains the
  233.           Strategic Business Simulator software.
  234.  
  235.      2.   Double-click the Strategic Business Simulator - Decision
  236.           Entry program icon.

  240. Enter Company Decisions
  241.  
  242. After starting the Strategic Business Simulator - Decision Entry
  243. program, a SBS game data file must be opened by choosing File:Open. 
  244. After opening a SBS game data file, simply choose a company and
  245. enter the decision entry password for that company.
  246.  
  247. The decision entry window will appear when the correct
  248. password is entered.  This window is where the company's management
  249. decisions are entered.  To move between data entry fields, simply
  250. press the [TAB] key.  When the Recalculate Values button is
  251. pressed,  the data entry fields are checked for valid decisions and
  252. some calculated fields are updated such as unit cost.  To save the
  253. decisions and end the decision entry window, choose the Save Values
  254. and Quit  button.

  256. From the decision entry window, you may also view your company's
  257. current Quarterly Report or the Company Ranking Report by choosing
  258. the appropriate button.

  260. After all the companies have entered their decisions for the
  261. current quarter, the Strategic Business Simulator - Decision Entry
  262. program can be closed by choosing File:Exit.
  263.

  265. Process a Quarter of Data
  266.  
  267. After all companies have entered their decisions for a quarter, 
  268. the Game Coordinator should run the Strategic Business Simulator -
  269. Control Panel and choose to open the SBS game data file that is to
  270. be processed by choosing File:Open.  Then the Game Coordinator
  271. should select the Process a Quarter of Data button.  The Strategic
  272. Business Simulator will automatically check to make sure all of the
  273. companies have entered their decisions and notify you of the ones
  274. that have not.

  276. After processing a quarter of data, the Game Coordinator should
  277. view, print off, and distribute the Quarterly Reports of the
  278. companies.  To determine which company is performing the best,
  279. select the View Company Ranking Report button.  After the companies
  280. have analyzed their company's Quarterly Report, the companies are
  281. ready to enter the next quarter of management decisions.  This
  282. procedure is repeated until the desired number of quarters have
  283. been played.  The maximum number of quarters that can be played is
  284. 16 (shareware version is limited to 3).

  290.  
  291. Installing Strategic Business Simulator on a local area network
  292.  
  293. Why use Strategic Business Simulator on a local area network?
  294.  
  295.      If you install the Strategic Business Simulator on a network
  296.      server, your computer's hard disk is free for other uses.
  297.  
  298.      Also, using the Strategic Business Simulator on a local area
  299.      network (LAN) allows all or many of the teams to be entering
  300.      their company's management decisions at the same time.
  301.  
  302. Installing Strategic Business Simulator on a local area network
  303.  
  304.      You can use the Strategic Business Simulator Install program
  305.      to setup a shared copy of the game on a LAN, but some
  306.      additional steps must be taken to ensure that everything runs
  307.      correctly.  It's probably best to have a network administrator
  308.      install and configure the software on a LAN.
  309.  
  310. To Install Strategic Business Simulator on a server:
  311.  
  312.      1.   Make sure all file and directory permissions are enabled
  313.           in your networking program before you begin.  Refer to
  314.           your networking documentation for information about
  315.           setting permissions.
  316.  
  317.      2.   Create a directory on the network server drive where you
  318.           want to install the Strategic Business Simulator
  319.           software: \SBS.
  320.  
  321.      3.   Use the Strategic Business Simulator Install program to
  322.           setup the software on your network server. When the
  323.           installation program asks where you want to install the
  324.           files, type the path of the new Strategic Business
  325.           Simulator directory on your server.
  326.  
  327. To Install Strategic Business Simulator on a workstation:
  328.  
  329.      1.   Ensure that Windows is installed and the user account
  330.           has access to the Strategic Business Simulator shared
  331.           directory on the network server.  (Read and Write access
  332.           is required for this shared directory.)
  333.  
  334.      2.   Start Windows and create a Strategic Business Simulator
  335.           group in the Program Manager, then add SBS-Control Panel
  336.           (SBS.EXE) and SBS-Decision Entry (SBSDEC.EXE)  to the
  337.           group.
